The Origin of Navasathi in Sri Gopananda natha's divine words
My Gurudeva Sri Sri Sri Jaganmohanananda-natha, entrusted me with the task of reviving Vedic form of Devi's worship by removing the Tantrik influence, and to correct the error ridden Sapthasati, the currently popular text of Sri Devi Mahatmyamu. In order to fulfil my task, I travelled extensively studying various forms of Her worship. I found to my dismay that the traditional Vedic worship is almost defaced and polluted at almost all places including many Maha Kshetras. Many people preferred the tantrik cult though aware of the use of Pancha makaras and of the basic immorality ruling the Koulachara. Yielding meekly to that demoralised cult is a bad sign when compared to the vast treasure of Vedic knowledge inherited by us.
Later meditating deep on the subject, I visualised the existence of Navasathi as the earliest form of Devi's worship under Samayachara. While observing Navarathri pujas, it also occurred to my mind that in consonance with Navarathris, Nava durgas, Nava chakras, Nava yoginis, Nava konas, Nava Avaranas, Navasathi be read instead of Sapthasati. Sruthi says "Nava", the number nine in mathematics is identified for Sri Devi, as it is the highest in numbers denoting completeness as Devi Herself. Further seven is not the highest number and even the unseen chakras in the body such as Sahasrara, are not seven as many generally think, but they are nine and an accomplished guru in the Vedic tradition can only explain the greatness of the other two remaining chakras. In support of my vision I found a reference also regarding the existence of Navasathi in SRI CHANDIKOPASTHI DEEPIKA, authored by Sri Sri Sri Vidyanrisimha Bharathi of Karaveera peetham. Based on the guidelines furnished therein and coupled with the knowledge of my research work, I got the error ridden Sapthasati rectified as the first phase of my task. By the grace of my Gurudeva and Mother, the story of "Sri Devi Mahatmyamu" from the purana saw the light of the day under the title "SRI DEVI MAHATMYAMU SRI CHANDI NAVASATHI MANTRAMALA"- a garland of nine hundred and twenty one sloka-mantras adorning the Mother. In this the tantrik features were completely removed and Sri Devi is identified as the Supreme Mother, Brahma Vidya, glorifying Her achievements in one single story as in the purana.
Another reference to Navasathi found in 'Vamakeswara Tantra' reads as
The sanctity attached to Navasathi and the intense care imposed to protect the 'parampara' were propounded through the message that Navasathi be given only to the deserving person. Another reference to Navasathi establishes it as the earliest form of worship in Kalpas.
Kalpas in our Vedic literature are Padma Kalpa, Brahma Kalpa and Swethavarahakalpa.the reference confirms that Navasathi is age-old and adored since time immemorial.
